Payroll Management Certificate 2010Charles Sturt University

The Payroll Management Certificate is run by The Association for Payroll Specialists in conjunction
with Charles Sturt University. It is designed to give payroll specialists an understanding of how to manage staff resources and systems to enable the production of punctual and accurate payments to employees and meet company reporting requirements.

Students need to have general payroll experience and knowledge before enrolling, as the course
is not designed to teach basic payroll.

Course Outline

Following are the five core modules of the course:

• Computing module - 22 February - 31 March 2010
• People Management module - 3 May - 9 June 2010
• Superannuation module - 19 July - 25 August 2010
• Employment Relations module - 13 September - 20 October 2010
• Remuneration module - 8 November - 15 December 2010

Each module runs for six weeks and students will need to complete an assignment and exam satisfactorily to pass each module. Students are also required to complete a major project during
the year. Students can enrol starting with any module and at anytime during the year.

Course Objectives

To understand State and Federal legal requirements as they relate to the payroll function.

Review, formulate and recommend system and organisational changes to optimise new technology
and the effective deployment of staff associated with accurate payroll production.

To understand the overall payroll function within an organisation in either the private or public sector.

To understand the integration of the payroll, human resources and accounting functions.

Course Structure

There are two options available for students.

Lecture learning (Sydney only)

This will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings between 6.30pm and 9.00pm at a Sydney
CBD venue. The course begins on Monday 22nd February and concludes on Wednesday 15th
December 2010.

Distance learning

The notes will be mailed to the students in a folder, complete with the assignment details prior to
the start of each module.

For each module, students will be able to dial in and participate in two lectures. A message board
is available for students to ask questions and receive answers on relevant topics.

Assessment

Students will need to complete an assignment and an exam for each of the five modules.

An assessment will be made at the end of each module along with an overall yearly assessment.

Successful completion of the certificate course is dependent on a pass in each module of at least 60%. Results for each module are allocated as follows:

• Assignment - 30%
• Module examination - 70%

Students must obtain a pass of 50% in the exam to pass the module. The exam will be held on
the last Wednesday of each module. Lecture learners will sit the exam at the normal classroom
venue.

Distant learners may choose to sit the exam at the normal classroom venue, at our Melbourne
offices or have their exam supervised in their workplace.

Major Project

Students are required to complete a major project during the year. The project will take the form of
a report to management on the implementation of a new system for the payroll department.
Students will be advised of the full details of the major project in week 3 of module one.
